What the 2004 Audit told us
- Violent crime encompasses a very broad range of offences from homicides to relatively minor child on child altercations
- Violence against the person (including sexual offences) accounted for 20% of all recorded crime in North Lincolnshire with robbery adding a further 1%
- Recorded violent crime in North Lincolnshire rose sharply during 2003/4 with offences numbering nearly 50% above the average for England and Wales
- Violent crimes occur most frequently in Scunthorpe. Town ward recorded almost 4 times higher than the national average, with Crosby and Park ward recording a rate almost twice the national average
What we are doing
The Nitesafe initiative was launched on 1st June 2005. Representatives from the night time economy such as licensees, and fast food operatives are working in partnership with the police and the local authority to both tackle alcohol related violence and disorder in Scunthorpe town centre and to encourage growth in the night time economy.
We are working with our partners to increase reporting of Domestic Violence and have established a baseline for domestic violence incidents.
We have established a project to support victims of domestic violence through the civil and criminal justice system to reduce repeat victimisation.
We deliver a regular programme of training and awareness raising to a range of frontline agency staff and volunteers, including midwives and other community based health providers, housing staff, youth services and educational staff and police.
We are encouraging the reporting of Hate Crime incidents.
How you can help
- If you're going for a night out, make sure that you plan how you are going to get home
- If you're drinking alcohol, have a good time but know your limits
- Reporting Crime Anonymously. Whilst you are always encouraged to report crime directly to the police, if you prefer, you can pass information about crime anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
