What the 2004 Audit told us
- There are about 13,000 Property crime each year – over half of all recorded crime in North Lincolnshire
- Theft, burglary and vehicle crime, in that order, make up the majority of recorded property crimes
- Property crimes occur most frequently in and around Scunthorpe Town Centre
- Most of the rural areas have a lower level of crime than the average for England and Wales
- The number of house burglaries has decreased significantly since 2002/3 but is still above the average for England and Wales
- During the summer months, 'Sneak in' burglaries can account for 30% of all house burglaries
- Vehicle crime has increased since 2001/2 against the national trend. In North Lincolnshire, the level of vehicle crime is over 40% higher than the national average. About 20% of vehicles taken without authority (joyriding) are later abandoned and deliberately set on fire
What we are doing
The One Community Project comprises of two strands. One involves a police officer and probation working intensively with known prolific offenders in an effort to break the cycle of re-offending - Prolific Offenders. The other involves the free target hardening of homes for victims of burglary and vulnerable occupants. The project has fitted over 2000 security devices to households in North Lincolnshire.
The Beat The Sneak campaign raises awareness of the threat of 'sneak in' burglaries – where a house is burgled through an insecure door or window whilst the occupant is at home. Last summer Community Associations and Neighbourhood Watch Groups, aided by 'Billy the Burglar' helped us to reduce the number of sneak in burglaries by 49%. The campaign will continue this summer in an effort to get the message across to householders.
Promoting and supporting Neighbourhood Watch schemes and other community crime reduction activities.
Issuing immobilisers to the owners of those vehicles identified as being most at risk of being stolen.
Working to improve the security of those areas where vehicle crime most commonly occurs.
Raising awareness of the risks of leaving property on view in an unattended vehicle.
How you can help
- Be more security conscious – for example, almost a third of burglaries are sneak - in's where the offender has entered a property via an insecure door/window whilst the occupant is in another part of the building
- Set up a Neighbourhood Watch or Residents Group
- Reporting Crime Anonymously. Whilst you area encouraged to report crime directly to the police, if you prefer, you can pass information about crime anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
